LGSOC Awareness Day, established in 2024 and observed annually on September 9th during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, spotlights a rare but significant subtype that affects younger women: low-grade serous ovarian cancer (LGSOC).

Created by STAAR Ovarian Cancer Foundation and Verastem Oncology, this awareness day addresses critical challenges faced by the 6,000-8,000 women affected by LGSOC in the U.S., particularly troubling given that 99% of diagnosed patients had no knowledge of LGSOC before their diagnosis.

The recent LGSOC Patient Impact Survey revealed a concerning three-year average time to accurate LGSOC diagnosis. LGSOC represents less than 10% of ovarian cancers but presents unique challenges: it typically affects women in their 40s or younger, responds differently to standard treatments, requires specialized research attention, and is often misdiagnosed due to its rarity. With no FDA-approved treatments specifically for LGSOC and limited treatment options available, the need for targeted solutions is urgent.
